EDI ASN (Advanced Shipment Notices)

Welcome to the home page of ASN Advanced Shipment Notices. Please bookmark as this page will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

An ASN (Advanced Shipment Notice) is an electronic delivery note, which is sent by the supplier, in advance of the arrival of goods at a Sainsbury's RDC or Fulfilment Factory. The ASN is key to the receiving operation within the Sainsbury's RDC. For suppliers who either deliver direct to the Sainsbury's RDC, use a perishable consolidator or a non-perishable consolidator the provision of ASNs' will be mandatory.

Web based solutions are also being developed for those suppliers who do not wish to develop their EDI systems and are planned to be available in May 2002, however these will not be able to provide the level of system integration possible through traditional EDI.

The successful implementation of ASNs will provide the following benefits:

  • 1. Reduced data entry
  • 2. Reduced keying errors
  • 3. Faster receipt of product
  • 4. Capability to prioritise goods inwards
  • 5. Reducing turn around of Vehicles
  • 6. Supplier
           - Reducing turn around of Vehicles
           - Reduced Invoice queries
  • 7. Haulier
           - Improved unload time
           - Reduced waiting time
  • 8. Sainsbury's
           - Visibility
           - Resource implications

The ASN requirements also include the use of SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Codes) EAN128 Pallet Labels. This is a mandatory requirement for all pallets.

    Types of ASN Messages

Due to the nature of the ASN message, Sainsbury's are implementing three types of ASN messages and it is important that the correct message is used. The types are listed below:
  • 1. Suppliers delivering goods directly to Sainsbury's DC. This is the 'Full' Despatch Advice Message
    2. Suppliers delivering goods to a Hub or Haulier. This is the 'Planned' Despatch Advice Message
    3. Consolidators delivering goods to a depot. This is the 'Consolidators Despatch Advice'
