Milk

Then: Our first shop in Drury Lane opened 140 years ago in 1869 and only sold butter, eggs and milk.
Now:  We're the first retailer to sell own-brand 1% fat milk as a healthier alternatire to semi-skimmed in 2008

We developed Vitapint, a reduced-fat, vitamin enriched milk first product of its kinds in Britain.  

Eggs

Then:  We were the first retailer to source British eggs over 110 years ago.
Now:  We were the first major multiple retailer to achieve 100% supply of own-brand eggs from cage-free hens in February 2009.

Bread

Then:  Our wrapped bread was first sold in the early 1950's in our self-service stores.
Now:  In March 2009 we became the first supermarket to use flour made with wheat sourced only from East Anglia, in all our loaves and rolls made in our instore bakeries

Bananas

Then:  We've been working with banana growers since 1955.
Now:  In 2007, we were the first supermarket to convert all our bananas to Fairtrade.  Over half the Fairtrade bananas sold in the UK come from our stores.

Tea

Then:  We started working with Finlay's our tea supplier in 1903.
Now:  All our Red Label tea is Fairtrade and has been blended by this same supplier for over 100 years

Sugar

Then:  We first sold sugar over 100 years ago.
Now:  All our own-brand sugar is Fairtrade (since March 2008).

Chicken

Then:  The Maunder family & generations of West Country farmers have been supplying us with chicken for over 110 years and continue to do so today.
Now:  In addition to our Freedom Food Endorsed range of chickens, all our corn-fed and Taste the difference free range are also endorsed by Freedom Food, which guarantees that the chickens have been reared on farms that meet RSPCA's strict welfare standards for chicken.

Fresh Salmon

Then:  Fresh fish was first sold in our stores in 1970.
Now:  In June 2008 we became the first major supermarket to source all our farmed salmon from farms approved by Freedom Food as meeting the RSPCA's strict welfare standards for salmon.

Beef
